Entertainment & Culture for March

Exhibitions & Galleries to Visit in March

By Phyllis Oberman, Art Aficionado

This month Phyllis Oberman looks at some of the fabulous art and exhibitions you can enjoy in March, and a great new book by Andrew Marr.

Royal Revelations

Charles 1: King and Collector at The National Gallery in London is a revelation of an exhibition that brings together for the first time since 1649 highlights of the King’s remarkable collection that he amassed during his short lifetime.

Charles, who was executed in 1649, owned around 2000 artworks that are said to have changed the way art was appreciated in Britain. This landmark show has drawn together around 150 of these works including 90 loaned by The Queen from the Royal Collection.

Galleries from around the world and public and private collectors have contributed artworks to this show and it is doubted that such a  blockbuster show could be mounted again.

The striking painting shown above is of Charles I and is by Anthony Van Dyck, 1635-6, Royal Collection Trust © Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

World-famous artists’ names such as Holbein, Titian, Van Dyck (who became Charles’s Court Painter), Rubens, are on display demonstrating Charles I’s fanatical collecting over a 20 year period.    His belief in ‘the divine right of Kings’ proved to be his downfall leading to The English Civil War.

Victorious Oliver Cromwell signed Charles’s death warrant and began  selling off Charles’s entire priceless collection that is now dispersed to collections around the world.

Concessionary tickets are available.

Double Exposure

Meticulously fine brushstrokes and wonderfully vibrant colours drawn from ancient Indian miniature paintings but with added political and social comment can be seen at a remarkable new exhibition at The Walker Art Gallery until 20th May, 2018.

The Singh Twins

Slaves of Fashion: New  Works by The Singh Twins  with the sub-heading Indian Textiles and the politics of global consumerism explores this theme in a fascinating collection of paintings, objects and digitally created imagery by Liverpool artists The Singh Twins.

Britain’s colonial history in India and elsewhere looms large in the twins’ work.

The textiles and designs they incorporate in their pictures evoke images of the slaves picking cotton in the southern states of the US, the shipping of the raw fibres to India where the exquisite fabrics such as chintz are woven for shipping back to the British luxury market.

Chintz The Price of Luxury © The Singh Twins

One of their works on paper called The King is Dead: Long Live The King refers to the historic trade in cotton and how in today’s fashion industry colonial-style exploitation continues.

The exhibition also includes jewellery, fashion, ceramics, books, paintings Indian textiles and embroidery from National Museums Liverpool collections.    Wolverhampton Art Gallery which collaborated on this show along with The Singh Twins and the University of Liverpool will have the exhibition from 21st July to 16th September 2018

Entrance to The Walker Art Gallery is free.   The exhibition closes on 20th May, 2018.  Further information: and

L S Lowry’s wonderful and very rare painting The Liver Buildings, Liverpool is now on display on long term loan.

It has not been seen in Liverpool since 1973.

Vote Vote Vote

It would be hard not to be aware that 2018 marks the centenary of the act of Parliament giving some women the right to vote.

Exhibitions, TV and radio, and special events are being held up and down the country  to mark the occasion.   Certainly too many to mention them all.   However one or two do stand out as well worth a visit.

Sylvia Pankhurst, one of the great suffragettes, was trained as an artist.   A selection of her work is on show at Manchester Art Gallery until 29th April 2018.

Between 27th June and 6th October 2018 Voice & Vote: Women’s Place in Parliament will be held in Westminster Hall within The Houses of Parliament.

The exhibition will tell the story of women in Parliament, the campaigning, the protests and the achievements.

Much of the material from the parliamentary archives will be shown for the first time and digital technology will bring many to life. Lost historical spaces used by the first women in Parliament will be recreated.

This exhibition is free to enter and advance booking is essential.   Security demands a somewhat convoluted method of booking which can be done online, by phone or in person.

Full details can be found at

Votes for Women Poster

Art on the Underground

Also in London Art on the Underground will have a year-long programme of works commissioned from an international selection of women artists to mark the centenary.

These images will be seen throughout the underground system and on tube maps, posters and billboards.

Elegant Style Afloat Dundee

In the first half of the Twentieth Century especially in the 1920’s and 30’s transatlantic and international travel saw the launch of a remarkable panoply of ocean liners.   For the first time in the UK the V & A Museum in London’s South Kensington in cooperation with the Peabody Essex Museum in Massachusetts, USA, has opened an exhibition: Ocean Liners: Speed and Style.

Virtually a floating city, the liners were designed and fitted out with the very best design using the finest architects and designers often reflecting the elegant art deco style.

The show includes some outstanding objects such as a 1909 diamond and pearl tiara rescued from The Lusitania, an elegant embellished 1930’s dress by Lanvin of Paris, art deco style furniture and glamorous wall panels.

The Normandie, launched in 1935, shown in New York

Among the great liners featured at the V & A show  are The Normandie (French), The Queen Mary, The Queen Elizabeth and the QE11 (British), Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse (German) and The Michelangelo (Italian), not to mention The Titanic and Brunel’s earlier Great Eastern.

These liners are like floating cities and many passengeers booked for the sheer luxury experience of a transatlantic crossing.   Today, of course, these massive floating edifices operate primarily for the holiday market.

Ocean Liners: Speed and Style continues until 17th June, 2018. For details visit  Concessions are available. It then opens on 15th September at the new (about to be opened) V&A.

Art In Brief

Two of the greatest names in modern art can be seen at Tate Modern in London.

Modigliani, who died in Paris in 1920 tragically young, is the subject of a major exhibition of his extraordinary work that combines figurative painting with his unique elongated style.

This show closes on 5th April, 2018.

The picture shows Jeanne Hebuterne, painted in 1919 by Modigliani

Opening on 8th March at Tate Modern is Picasso 1932: Love, Fame, Tragedy –  bringing together over 100 paintings, works on paper and sculpture gathered from around the world, many of them from  private collections.   1932 has been described as Picasso’s “year of wonders”.

His artworks reflected his amorous relationships and 1932 saw him captivated by his latest muse, Marie-Therese Walter.

Pablo Picasso, 1932 by Cecil Beaton

Sensual paintings of Marie-Therese are the major features of this show.

Already a celebrity Picasso held his first major retrospective in Paris.

Later in the same year Marie-Therese Walter recovered from a serious illness that inspired paintings reacting to this.

Picasso 1932: Love, Fame, Tragedy also brings together family photographs and glimpses into Picasso’s family life.

The exhibition continues until the 9th September, 2018 so you have plenty of time to visit.

Light Reading about Art and Paintings

A great new book by Andrew Marr

A Short Book About Painting by well-known TV personality Andrew Marr tells about his love of paintings and his own technical challenges as a painter.  After his serious stroke in 1913 left him partially paralysed he faced additional obstacles in expressing his ideas in oil paint.

He persevered and sought to improve his paintings and he describes his efforts as well as featuring great painters whom he admired and who influenced him.

The publisher is Quadrille and the book is priced at £15.00.

Sixtyplusurfers Competition

Win a Dremel Hatch Project Kit

Sixtyplusurfers has teamed up with Dremel to offer one lucky reader the chance to win a Hatch Project Kit.

Mother’s Day is fast approaching, and instead of making a last-minute dash for the clichéd floral or pink high street offering, make something for mum that will serve long after the gift wrap has been removed.

It’s with that in mind that Dremel has the perfect present for 11th March and is encouraging you to say no to the usual bunch of flowers, turn your back on chocolates and wave goodbye to bath sets this Mother’s Day.

Whether your mum is into arts and crafts or loves something handmade, for a gift that she’ll treasure forever, create a bespoke piece of art she can showcase on her wall with the Dremel Hatch Project Kit (RRP £39.99).

Brand new from global craft brand, Dremel, the Hatch Project Kit is an all-in-one product that contains the inspiration, instructions and materials needed to paint and create your own piece of art. It comes complete with a pallet, paint, brushes, a marker, eraser, sandpaper, test wood, letter stencils and London and New York skylines, plus another 80 you can download for free.

All that’s left to do is create and let your mum hang it proudly. You can easily follow the existing templates that come with the kit, or just use your imagination to produce a truly bespoke piece of art that brings the iconic sights of London, bustle of Tokyo or romance of Paris into your own home.

If you’re more of a hands-on crafter, Dremel has also unveiled the latest addition to its multi tool range, the 4300 (RRP £139.99). From drilling jewellery and etching onto glass to polishing and carving or even cleaning grout from bathroom tiles, this product can do it all.

Complete with 360° adjustable LED light giving maximum visibility for enhanced precision and an improved motor for quieter, cooler operation, you can tackle the biggest and smallest of DIY tasks with detail and precision. The 4300 is also equipped with a three-jaw chuck that accepts Dremel accessories of differing sizes, meaning there’s no need for a wrench so attachment changes are a quick and easy process.

Dremel has also launched its 8220 (RRP from £109.99); a variable speed, cordless rotary tool incorporating the 360° LED light of the 4300, in addition to being powered by a 12V Lithium-ion battery, ensuring there’s the freedom of cordless technology but no compromise on power.

It really lets you work your way into fiddly curves and bends making it perfect for sanding down furniture for upcycling projects, carving designs into creations or even cleaning rusty garden fencing so it’s primed and ready for a rejuvenating lick of paint!

All Dremel products are available to buy online from

Mother's Day Offer

Go Free to Ironbridge Gorge Museums on Mother’s Day

The Ironbridge Gorge Museums are inviting mums to enjoy a day out as their guest on Mothering Sunday, 11th March, when accompanied by another full-paying visitor. This free entry offer includes Blists Hill Victorian Town, Coalport China Museum, Jackfield Tile Museum, Coalbrookdale Museum of Iron, Museum of The Gorge and Enginuity.

At Blists Hill, where life over 100 years ago is recreated by costumed characters, you can treat mum further and buy her a Victorian High Tea in the Club Room with delicious sandwiches, cream-filled scones and pastries along with a glass of sparkling wine and a pot of freshly brewed tea. Afternoon Tea must be booked in advance, see for details.

In the Victorian era Mothering Sunday was a special day when children working away in domestic service could return home to visit their mother and families. Although celebrated during Lent, fasting was relaxed and families could indulge in delicious rich foods and celebrations.

Children were encouraged to bake a Simnel Cake or pick flowers as a gift for their mothers; hence the evolution of present giving on Mothering Sunday.
