New album for March

Don McLean releases Botanical Gardens

Prolific American songwriter and performer Don McLean is releasing his new album ‘Botanical Gardens’ on March 23rd 2018. The album precedes a 14-date UK tour, starting April 29th at the Southend Cliffs Pavilion. The album will be available for pre-order on February 2nd at for the CD and Vinyl, and iTunes for digital download.

With over 40 gold and platinum records worldwide, Don McLean is one of America’s most beloved country artists. ‘Botanical Gardens’, his 19th studio album and first in 8 years, is arguably one of Don’s most reflective to date, as he puts it, “The inspiration for the project started years ago when I would walk in the beautiful gardens in Sydney Australia near the Opera House. I would dream young dreams and it was a comfort and an inspiration. I was always young inside, like we all are, and I felt it again there.”

Further reflecting on the record, Don says, “the whole album really revolves around the title song. Later on I realised that the gardens are really a metaphorical heaven, and there’s a kind of death and rebirth.”

Intimacy can be found at the heart of this record, with Don penning personal numbers looking back on a life well lived, as well as his observations on youth and love. Recording at Watershed Studios in Nashville also allowed a different kind of intimacy for Don and his band, as they were made to “play close and feel the music”, resulting in a raw, yet tight sound throughout.

Don proves his prowess at writing timeless sounding songs once again, as the album weaves country, Americana, folk, and boot stomping rock in this release. In nearly 50 years on the scene, Don’s songs have become a staple in Americana music. His music has been performed by artists as diverse as Elvis Presley, Madonna, Fred Astaire, Chet Atkins, Weird Al Yankovick, George Michael, Josh Groban, Coolio and Ed Sheeran and his biggest hit ‘American Pie’ was recognised with high honours by being inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2003.

Don famously only uses Martin guitars. He has more than 40 Martin guitars and in the year 2000, the Martin Guitar Company honoured Don McLean with his own limited edition signature guitar, the D40DM.

  Ziynet Sali

Born in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Ziynet moved to Manchester when she was just a few weeks old where she remained until she was six. Her family then returned to Northern Cyprus where she finished her education, before attending a prestigious music academy in Istanbul, the cultural capital of Turkey. It is partly because of her immersion into the culture of Britain, Turkey, and Cyprus that make Ziynet the international star that she is.

Ziynet Released her Debut album in 2000, a release that has been followed by an extremely successful seventeen years. She has since released 6 albums and 7 singles, had her track ‘Bugün Adım Leyla’ amass 44 million likes on Youtube, and won the award of Best Vocalist at the Euro Dance competition (a competition voted for by fans) in Italy in 2006. Her incredibly powerful vocals and large vocal range have made it very easy to attract a large fan base in many different countries around the world.

In 2010, Ziynet’s single ‘Rüya’ was the most played song of the year, and in 2012 her track ‘Herşey Güzel Olacak’ was given the award for Best Video by Turkey’s most prestigious music video station. She was also voted Best Female Act in 2016 at the DAFBAMA music awards in Hamburg. Ziynet is no stranger to success and fame, and the many awards that she has been given is a testament to this.

Having sold millions of records, and accumulated more than a hundred million YouTube views, Ziynet Sali can no longer walk around in Turkey without being recognised and approached by her many fans. She now plans to bring her stardom to England, with the release of her new single ‘Magic’ on the 12th of January.

The Album (that ‘Magic’ appears on) contains a wonderfully eclectic mix of musical styles. Some tracks are heavily influenced by her Turkish and Greek heritage, others are Hip Hop and RnB in their production, and some are, soon to be, pop classics. Ziynet wants this album to reach listeners outside of her current audience, a desire easily achieved with such a varied and diverse track list. ‘Magic’ combines pop-centric vocals reminiscent of artists such as Jennifer Lopez, with a high energy dance beat featuring a nod to Ziynet’s heritage, with a Turkish inspired drop.

The track was produced by Anthony Marshall (known simply as Marshall), an award winning record producer and song writer who has worked with artists such as Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez, and Nelly Furtado – to mention just a few of his successes. He also wrote Craig David’s hit single ‘What’s your Flava’, which charted at Number 3 on the UK charts in 2004, and still holds the title for Craig David’s biggest grossing song.

Ziynet formerly used the UK as a quiet haven, a place that she could escape to where she still had anonymity – however this is all about to change.  Having already shown her ability to attract fans and generate millions of listens for her tracks elsewhere in the world, Ziynet is now ready to receive the same attention in the UK. With her single ‘Magic’ just released, 2018 looks to be a very busy year for this international pop sensation.

Sixtyplusurfers Interview

  Sarah Darling

Sarah Darling is one of Country’s fastest rising stars right now. She’s toured with Ward Thomas, sold out her UK shows last year, was nominated for best ‘International Touring Artist of the Year’ by the BCMA Awards, and has just announced her biggest ever UK headline tour. We caught up with her to find our more about the tour and her music.

How excited are you to be returning to the UK this year?

“I’m absolutely over the moon about coming back over! Especially with a full band headlining tour ahead. This will be the first time for UK fans to hear Dream Country songs with bigger instrumentation as well as brand new tunes!

“I feel so much love every time I come over, and also touring places I’ve never played yet which is very exciting.”

What can fans expect from your upcoming shows?

“Fans can expect to hear some of my older tunes as well as brand new music. I will even be sprinkling in songs from way back when. There’s a great story to tell throughout the evolution of my music to where I am now.

“I’m also excited about are some of the venues the fans will get to experience my music in. I think of shows as a place to get lost in the music completely and beautiful places really do that for my songs.”

You’ve announced that your brand new single will be coming out on March 2nd. Can you tell us a bit more about it?

“What’s amazing about this future new release is the fact that it’s been a song that’s been around awhile. It’s called “Wasted” and deals with the emotional distress addiction causes for everyone. Especially the ones we love the most.

“I wrote the track years ago with Josh Osborne and Marc Beeson after a late night call with a family member in tears about the destruction of their marriage.

“It just really hit me personally because of how invisible and lost the feeling can be for someone. Most of all I hope this song is healing for people. I have fans come up all the time after shows telling me how much the song meant to them. They are the reason I really wanted to release it. It feels real and shares a story that might help others in a time when I think the world is struggling with pain.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to share something close to my heart, and I hope it shows that we aren’t really that different all of us. We all share the same struggles and pain.”

How did it feel to be nominated for International Touring Artist of the Year 2017 at the BCMA Awards?

“I’m so honored to have been nominated for International Touring Artist of the year by the BCMA.

“I never dreamed in a thousand years that I’d be hopping across the pond sharing my music and story like I have the last few years. It’s truly amazing the journey life brings. It can be completely unexpected and beautiful.”

Clearly you’ve been adopted by Britain’s thriving country scene. Why do you think that is – and is there anything about Britain you particularly enjoy?

I am starting to feel like Britain has adopted me as one of their own! It’s exciting to be part of this country music movement happening at the moment.

I’m grateful for people like Bob Harris and Chris Country, who are great champions for Country music. I also feel like I’m really travelling from city to city, getting in the car on the wrong side of the road, and travelling all across the UK has been a big part of that.

“I’ve played shows in the bigger cities as well as the small which makes it special. To me that’s how you build a true relationship with a fan. I also simply love the Brits and their cute accents and love for afternoon tea!

“Truthfully, the feeling I get after a show in Britain is like no other I’ve experienced and I’m grateful for the love. It feels like my home away from home.”

You’ve been recording with Mark Bright recently. How did that partnership come about and what songs have come out of those sessions?

“I’m a person who believes in meant to be and just the right time. I’m so excited about the opportunity of working with Mark Bright. I’ve been admiring his work with Carrie Underwood for years and thought maybe one day I could work with someone like him. Now that dream has come true!

“I think “Dream Country” laid out the foundation for this partnership because that album is truly me. The lesson I’ve learned over the years, is always be yourself and it will lead to great places. We have recorded a few tracks that are the next phase of me and go a little deeper. It’s a project all about transformation. I use the visual of a cocoon to a Butterfly. It’s how I feel in my story at the moment. There’s been struggle, there’s been light and now I feel I’m right where I should be.”

What sort of music have you been listening to recently?

“I listen to a mixture everything! My favorite new discovery lately is Delta Rae. Always a listener to Coldplay, Kacey Musgraves & Alison Krauss!”

Can you tell us about Your last album was released on your own record label Be Darling Records. What benefits come from releasing music on your own independent label?

“The benefits of releasing an album yourself is creative control. The timing is yours and you can make it look and sound the way you want it to.

“The downside is that I have to wear many hats, but I’ve learned so much about all sides of the music industry. I’m always open to a label partners if it’s the right fit. I’m loving the process so far.

With that being said – what advice would you give to someone trying to break into the industry?

“Best advice is don’t try and be someone you’re not. I see that so often in the music industry. If something is popular, people try to create a carbon copy of it. It’s you that shines through. Also don’t ever let anyone bring you down. Don’t let one person dictate your story.”

Finally – you’ll be touring in March – during Lent. What’s one thing you’ll be giving up?

“I have an addiction to a shop called “& Other Stories and they are all over England. I will give that up but it will be hard!”

Win Mauro Dirago
  ‘Rewind Deluxe’

Sixtyplusurfers has teamed up with Bright Star Records to offer three lucky readers the chance to win ‘Rewind Deluxe’, the fabulous new album by Mauro Dirago.

Mauro Dirago – one of the team behind the globally successful Elvis Royal Philharmonic Orchestra albums – swings melodically into 2018 with the release of his own deluxe album ‘Rewind Deluxe’, out on 2nd March.

As an industry stalwart, it’s no surprise that the album is bursting with star-studded collaborations including Kate Robbins who duets alongside Mauro on the new single ‘Fever’ (out 26 January), Britain’s Got Talent star Julian Smith who delivers the world’s first ever sax duet and Boy George, whose dance remixes have been added as bonus tracks to this deluxe edition.

‘Rewind Deluxe’ is an eclectic album of our time. A journey through musical decades, traversing genres and sounds that have become the road-map to musical history. Shunning the need to succumb to trend or fashion, this album delivers an eclectic collection of singles from across the decades, all jig-sawing easily together into the perfect album; star-studded with impressive collaborations to add extra spice.

Spinning back to the 80s, ‘Slave For You’ is a partnership with Britain’s Got Talent finalist, Julian Smith, delivering elements of a rich Latin sound; the George Michael-esque ‘King of Kings’ was written for Mauro by Rob Davies & Boy George (again, a strong supporter of Mauro); whilst ‘Addicted To Fame’ is a poke at the current desperation for celebrity status, wanting to be famous simply for the sake of fame.

For this deluxe edition, Mauro delivers an additional four songs, bowing to strong public demand as two of the bonus tracks are the highly sought after club and acoustic mixes of his collaborative work with Boy George on ‘King of Kings’, plus the new Latin version of ‘Slave For You’ and new tracks ‘Life In The Love Lane’ and ‘A In Love’.

A tribute to his all-time hero, Elvis, Mauro pluck his unique version of ‘Fever’ from the album as his next single release. Featuring Paul McCartney’s cousin, Kate Robbins, this version of ‘Fever ’is the first time that anyone has recorded the track with a male and female artist.

Kate Robbins says, “Fever isn’t usually recorded as a man/women duet, so it was great to record it in this way. Working with Mauro Dirago is always fun!”

Mauro Dirago is a music industry stalwart. Constantly present, smartly considered and timing impeccably measured. When Mauro Dirago makes a manoeuvre in the industry, the results are ground breaking. As an aspiring artist in the early ‘90s, Dirago cleverly recruited the support and airplay of the UK’s biggest DJs before approaching record labels for a deal – the result was an endorsement from Mick Brown (Capital Radio) and an instant Pete Waterman signing to PWL Records.

Mauro says, “Only now, over 25 years after the release of his debut single, does Mauro Dirago feel the time is right for the release of his debut album. ‘It was never the right time to make an album, until now. Up to this point, music has been about ‘trends’ and it never felt right for me to fit into a box. I’m not a trendsetter or a fashion leader, I’m a musician making great music and this new album covers the ‘eras’. If you love all music, you’ll love Rewind.”

A modern album of fresh new original songs but with a hint of retro woven into its musical fabric, ‘Rewind’ is a must for all true music fans.

The debut album ‘Rewind Deluxe’ is released on 2nd March 2018 on Bright Star Records

The single ‘Fever’ is released on 26th January on Bright Star Records.
