Aphrodite’s Tears

 Review by Jenny Itzcovitz

Aphrodite’s Tears begins in the Summer of 1977 when Oriel Anderson finds herself on the charming Greek island of Helios hoping to fulfill a long held dream of joining an archaeological dive team.

Broken hearted after her university fiancé left her for her best friend, Oriel is determined to prove she can make it in a man’s world heading up an all-male team on her first underwater dig.

Spending her days excavating a Roman shipwreck, surrounded by turquoise waters and scorching sunshine, Oriel thinks that she has found paradise, until she meets her employer and the owner of the Island, Damian Theodorakis.

A widower, with a scarred face, Damian is a brooding presence on the island who instantly takes a shine to Oriel, but Oriel resolves to maintain a professional relationship between them. But the mercurial Damian has other ideas, and Oriel’s stay soon becomes a battle between her head and her heart.

When strange things start happening Oriel doesn’t know what to think. She learns that no other women who had come to work on the dive had lasted more than a few weeks, then a young boy almost drowns on one of the dives, and one morning Oriel finds a dead songbird in her room, its throat slit, and out exploring the beaches on her own Oriel becomes trapped in a cave. Could these things just be a coincidence or is someone trying to send her a warning?

A modern retelling of some of the most popular Greek myths, Aphrodite’s Tears evokes the Legends of the Gods.

I really enjoyed this magical tale about the beautiful and intelligent Oriel Anderson who joins an archeological dive team in the exotic Greek island of Helios to look for buried antiquities. Well researched, the book is packed with intrigue, suspense, and plenty of smoldering romance.

This epic love story is gripping and nail biting as Oriel unravels the secrets of the shipwreck she is exploring under water. There is also the mystery of the enigmatic and dangerous widower, Damien who casts his intoxicating spell over Oriel. Is he all that he seems? Or will he win her over with his irresistible magnetism and alluring charms?

The perfect way to escape, dive into this romantic love story and get away from it all.

 Author, Hannah Fielding

Following her huge success as one of the UK’s leading romance authors with total sales of over 130k, Aphrodite’s Tears follows the award winning success of Hannah Fielding’s previous novels Burning Embers, Echoes of Love, Masquerade, Legacy and Indiscretion.

Echoes of Love won Romance Novel of the Year at the IPB Awards in 2012 and Burning Embers was Amazon’s book of the month in 2011, while Hannah’s novels have been translated into 13 languages. With its spectacular setting and deep emotional drama, Aphrodite’s Tears will appeal both to fans of her backlist, as well as lovers of atmospheric travel writing including Santa Montefiore, Penny Vincenzie, Victoria Hislop and Lucinda Riley.

Egyptian by birth Hannah is fluent in French, English and Arabic and has lived all over the world, she currently lives between her writing retreat in the South of France and her rambling family home in Ireland.

Hannah’s grandmother, Esther Fanous, was the revolutionary feminist writer in Egypt during the early 1900s.

Microwave Mug Soups

Review by Simon Fine

Everybody loves soup. It is the ultimate comfort food. Preparing your own soup has the added advantage of avoiding all those unwanted extra ingredients to flavour or preserve the contents of the average tinned or packet soup.

Home-made soup is versatile, wholesome, relatively easy to prepare and a perfect way of using up surplus vegetables and left over fish and meat.

However, home-made soup can often involve long cooking with big pans and bulk ingredients which can be a bit of a chore for those with busy lives and limited time to spend in the kitchen. So Theo Michaels’ Microwave Mug Soups is the perfect solution for those who want to create their own healthy soups but without spending a lot of time on the job or creating a lot of mess to clean up afterwards.

Every soup in his book has been specially created to suit the microwave and to be cooked in a single mug, ready to eat. Instead of opening up a can or adding water to a packet of dehydrated powdered soup, you can have a delicious home cooked mushroom soup, or chicken, even minestrone, made fresh in the same amount of time.

The book features 50 recipes, some vegetarian, some fish and some meat based. They vary from simple soups such as cream of tomato to some more exotic soups from around the world such as Polish sausage and cabbage soup, Greek fisherman’s soup and Green Thai curry prawn soup.

The ingredients are readily available from your local supermarket, the recipes are easy to follow and beautifully illustrated. Theo recommends that good quality or preferably home-made stock is used and if one mug is not enough, he explains how to vary the microwave settings to make larger quantities to feed the whole family or save some soup for later.

What I like about this book, apart from the delicious, varied and easy to prepare recipes, is that none of the recipes require a blender. Only a microwave.

            Author, Theo Michaels

Theo Michaels’ cooking first gained recognition when he wowed the judges on MasterChef in 2014.

Theo is now a sought-after pop-up chef, and has appeared regularly on television and radio – including repeat visits to ITV This Morning with Microwave Mug Meals, his other bestselling book.

Microwave Mug Soups is published by Lorenz Books. Price is £10 for the hardback.

Great Jobs for Everyone at 50+

Review by Simon Fine

An increasing number of people in their 50s and 60s want to keep working full or part time either for income or because they want to keep mind and body active, build social connections and give something to others who can benefit from their decades of experience.

For employers too, there are benefits from hiring older workers who are often more loyal, are able to make quick decisions and solve problems by applying their knowledge and experience and may require less training than a young recruit.

In her book “Great Jobs for Everyone 50+: Finding Work that Keeps You Happy and Healthy…and Pays the Bills”, Kerry Hannon shows readers in the fifty-plus age bracket where they might find opportunities that suit their experience and expertise.

The first part of the book covers ‘Great Jobs’ – including part-time jobs, working-from-home, jobs in the voluntary sector, jobs in healthcare, education and technology. There are dozens of great job ideas in each chapter with a description of what the work entails, the likely remuneration and qualification requirements.

The second part covers ‘The Great Jobs Workshop’ which includes strategies for 50+ job hunters, how and where to search for jobs, using your network, how to write a great CV, interviewing techniques and negotiating pay. The chapter on how to use social media is especially relevant, as platforms such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter are transforming the jobs market.

There is advice on volunteering either as a career move or as a step towards gaining a paid position. Finally a couple of brilliant chapters on part-time and consultancy roles and how to set yourself up as the boss of your own enterprise.

Whether the reader has taken early retirement, has been made redundant, needs additional income, is seeking a job that they will love, or simply wants to stay engaged and make a difference, Great Jobs for Everyone 50+ contains a substantial amount of material to enable them to pitch their skills and find their ideal employment in today’s job market.

 Author, Kerry Hannon

Kerry Hannon is an expert and strategist on career transitions, personal finance, and retirement. She is a frequent TV and radio commentator, AARP’s Jobs Expert, and a columnist for The New York Times, PBS Next Avenue, Forbes, and MONEY.

She is the author of a dozen books, including AARP’s Getting the Job You Want After 50 For Dummies, Love Your Job, and the award-winning What’s Next? Finding Your Passion and Your Dream Job in Your Forties, Fifties, and Beyond.

Great Jobs For Everyone 50+ is published by John Wiley & Sons. Price is £17.99 for the paperback.

The Glovemaker’s Daughter

Review By Jenny Itzcovitz

In 1666 a child is born in a farmhouse in Windebank, in the West Riding of Yorkshire. Named Rejoice (Joy) by her dying father, Joy grows up to witness the persecution of the farming community for following a banned faith.

Defying the authority of the local priest, she joins a group of Yorkshire pioneers travelling to the New World to form a colony close to Philadelphia – a passionate, rebellious and courageous woman, fighting against the constraints of the time. Will she find peace and love?

In 2004 a leather-bound book is found buried in the walls of the Meeting House in Good Hope, Pennsylvania. Its details trace the owner back to a Yorkshire farm in the Dales. And so a correspondence begins between Rachel Moorside and the man who found the journal, Sam Storer, as Rachel uncovers the tumultuous secrets of her family’s history.

As soon as I picked up this intriguing book I was gripped by the tale of the young and feisty Quaker girl, Rejoice who bravely stands up for her beliefs as she sees her family persecuted by those who don’t follow her faith.

Her journey takes her back to her grandfather’s family who disowned their son for marrying a girl of the Quaker faith. Joy doesn’t fit in, but must learn to hide her feelings and get along as best she can.

Original, gripping and well researched, I was immediately drawn to the authentically drawn character of Joy as she follows her faith and her heart. Well constructed and warmly written, this beautifully told story would make the perfect Mother’s Day Gift

 Author, Leah Fleming

Leah Fleming was born in Lancashire and is married with three sons and a daughter. She writes from an old farmhouse in the Yorkshire Dales and an olive grove in Crete.

The Glovemaker’s Daughter is published by Simon & Schuster. Price is £6.99 for the paperback.

The Longevity Diet

Review by Simon Fine

Can what you eat determine how long, and how well, you live? According to Dr Valter Longo the clinically proven answer is a confident, ‘Yes’.

Valter Longo grew up in Italy and moved to America to become a rock guitarist. However he developed a curiosity about why people in some parts of the world, including his native region in Italy, lived to a ripe old age. So he changed direction from rock musician to scientist and has devoted his life’s work into more than 25 years of research on ageing, nutrition, and disease. This has culminated in an evidence based solution to living to a healthy old age through healthy nutrition.

His diet is based on a series of remarkable discoveries in mice and humans indicating that specific diets can activate stem cells and promote regeneration and rejuvenation in multiple organs, His Longevity Diet is clinically proven to help you lose weight and reduce abdominal fat, make simple changes which can extend your healthy lifespan, prevent age-related muscle and bone loss and build your resistance to diabetes, cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer’s and cancer. The diet comprises mainly vegan foods and fish along with a more restrictive diet 4 times a year.

One of the most impressive features of Dr Longo’s work is that it is based on many years of research, clinical studies and studies of diets of people in regions where life expectancy is unusually long. Readers can study the evidence and decide for themselves how persuasive this approach is and the extent to which they choose to apply Dr Longo’s recommended diet.

As well as diet, he also recommends a simple exercise regime. The book includes summaries at the end of each chapter and culminates with a detailed two-week meal plan and tables showing the best sources of vitamins and minerals.

Dr Valter Longo is one of the world leaders in the field of ageing and age-related diseases and has published over 120 papers which include the discovery of some of the genes responsible for longevity and the identification of a genetic mutation protecting humans from some of the most common diseases.

He is currently a professor of Biogerontology and Director of the Longevity Institute in the School of Gerontology at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.

The Longevity Diet is published by Penguin Books. Price is £9.99 for the paperback.
