Dear Sixtyplusurfers
I thought this might bring a smile to
your faces.
Recently, I decided to do a spot of baking before
meeting a friend a for a coffee later that afternoon. In
order to avoid being covered with flour, I wore my old
pinny.
Later on, while I was waiting for my
friend in a nearby cafe, I couldn't
help but notice that I was receiving some
admiring glances from some of the men in the
cafe. I must be looking especially nice today, I thought
- my confidence having been given an instant boost.
However, glancing down, I suddenly realised why I had
been attracting so much attention. I was still wearing
my tatty, flour stained apron from earlier. How to be
brought back down to earth with a bump!

Dear Sixtyplusurfers
It is my new years resolution this year
to remain positive and upbeat about every possible
situation I find myself in.
I've recently lost my job so this positive attitude will
prove vital in the ensuing job hunt to find something
else. As I wasn't very happy in my previous position
hopefully it happened for a reason and my new start is
just around the corner.
Kathy Cakebread
Dear
Kathy
We are sorry to hear you lost your job and wish
you all the best of luck in finding a new and better
position.
You will often find
that as one door closes, a new and better one opens.

Dear Sixtyplusurfers
My new years resolution is to turn £100
into £10,000 by the end of the year!
The suggestion was put forward on a thread on one of the
MSN forums and I think it's a great idea. All the
participants are enthusiastic, motivated and supportive
of each other and have formed a fabulous camaraderie
which is sadly lacking in many aspects of life these
days.
For the first time in ages I feel really motivated, like
I can really achieve something and it feels great! Bring
on 2010!

Dear Sixtyplusurfers
We have a great new hobby, that's also a
money-saving tip!
Get a couple of hens and you'll never
have to buy wishy-washy supermarket eggs again. They're
so easy to keep too, and huge entertainment value.
All you need is a fox-proof coop that's
pretty easy to make yourself. We adapted a dog kennel by
simply adding a perch and making a door.
They'll eat all your food scraps to save
all that messing around with council bins. The only down
side is that you'll need to clean them out, but we've
found picking up their poo on a daily basis means you
rarely need to do a big clean.
If we're not going to be back until after
dusk, the neighbours are happy to shut their door as the
good girls put themselves to bed once it gets towards
darkness.
You can even pat yourself on the back for
doing your bit towards animal kindness if you take on
ex-battery girls. You wouldn't recognise our fat and
fluffy golden girls as the same sorry oven-ready looking
sad cases after just a few weeks.
The settle back, laugh at their antics
and enjoy your tasty breakfast!

Dear

It's wonderful to hear that you are enjoying
keeping hens. We've had several
letters from readers who keep chickens.
Perhaps you should all get together on our

and compare notes! And most of all -
we'd love to see your pictures in our

Readers' Letters
Dear Sixtyplusurfers
.jpg)
My hobby isn't so
unusual these days and certainly
not many years ago during the
war. It is keeping chickens in
my garden.
.jpg)
I started with 25 one day old
chicks that were supposed to be
auto sexed to try and avoid
finishing up with cockerels but
unfortunately the success is not
100% accurate and we finished up
with two cockerels which we
named Lord Bath because of his
many wifelets and of course
Kellogg due to the cornflake
logo being similar to our bird.
.jpg)
The chicks were kept warm under
a infra red lamp in our
conservatory and when they were
two weeks old the lamp was
turned off to climatise them to
the outdoors. We then kept them
penned in on the lawn safe from
foxes.
.jpg)
As you can see from the pictures
they soon develop and at 16
weeks become 'point of lay'. At
20 weeks approx they are
producing regular eggs and find
their place in the pecking
order!
.jpg)
The eggs produced at the
beginning are very often double
yolks and even triple until they
get into a routine.
We chose
hybrid chickens to get a variety
of colour in the eggs from white
brown and blue layers for added
interest but the colour is only
a tint on the outside because if
you break any egg open you will
see each one is white inside.
.jpg)
We find that our
chickens lay on average an egg
every two days so friends and
family enjoy a visit to collect
a half dozen.
It's not hard
keeping chickens they just need
clean water daily, layers
pellet, for all the nutrients in
order for them to produce deep
yellow yolked eggs and a strong
shell and a nice big area for
them to roam freely and safely
from predators.
.jpg)
There is nothing better than
collecting fresh eggs from your
garden for your breakfast.

Dear Sixtyplusurfers
.jpg)
With all this snow recently we
were quite anxious about whether we'd be able to
get up to see our precious Grandchildren. They
don't have a car and live a 2-3 hour journey
each way, (depending on the traffic!) which can
be a real drag.
The alternative, however, is
that we don't see them and that's simply not
acceptable! As you can see, the snow was still
lying on the ground at their house too, so we
had great fun building a snow-rabbit.
Providing you wrap up warm and
can get back in the house to warm up again, the
snow can be such fun when you're helping a
precious one to build their childhood memories.
Madelaine McLaughlin, Blakeney
Dear Madeleine
Thank you for sending in the
lovely photograph of your granddaughter and the
snow-rabbit. It looks like she had a lot of fun
making it.

Money Saving Ideas
Take up a money-saving hobby
Hobbies not only open your mind
to new experiences but they also take up your
time – important if you would otherwise spend it
in the pub drinking away your hard-earned money.
If a painting takes 20 hours to complete, and
you normally get through a pint an hour. That's
a saving of a least 40 quid a picture. Think
about it. Get painting. Go fishing.
Saving:
£100+
Avoid the payment protection racket
Banks and other lenders are
selling expensive insurance policies to cover
loan repayments to people who don't need it.
Don't be a victim of the hard-sell.
Saving: £100
Avoid extended warranties
Electrical goods are more
reliable than ever. If your new radio won't last
three years perhaps it's not worth buying in the
first place. Think about it: how many times has
your fridge broken down in the last five years?
And do you really need the hassle of claiming
for repairs to a £15 toaster
Shop online
The internet is gradually taking
over. Online grocery shopping is getting better
all the time and there are plenty of comparison
websites to help find the best prices for bigger
items. Give it a try, unless of course you like
fighting your way through supermarket crowds.

Just

Last year I was fortunate enough

Hopefully the Be-Well prize will
be just as beneficial to me.
Thank you once again for a

Dear Sixtyplusurfers
My money saving idea
Make
sure you use comparison sites when comparing
financial products such as car and home
insurance.
I
saved my Dad over £400 on his home insurance and
many companies offer special rates for people 50
and over.
Happy comparing!
Lucy Robinson, Leicester
Dear Lucy
Thank you for your money saving
idea. That is a very big saving you made for
your Dad.
