La Cafetière offers an unrivalled range of coffee, tea
and chocolate related products. The collection includes
cafetières, coffee machines, chocolatières, teapots,
diffusers, tableware, gift sets, accessories and spare
parts.
La Cafetière was the first brand of
French-press coffee makers to be sold in the UK. The
Classic Chrome Cafetière, which has become a design icon
in the housewares industry, was first launched over 30
years ago and remains a best seller to this day. The
name ‘La Cafetière’ actually appears in the Oxford
English Dictionary as the generic term for French-press
or ‘plunge-filter’ coffee makers!
The last few years has seen La Cafetière
further strengthen its reputation and it remains the
only UK Company focusing solely on hot beverages, most
notably for coffee. However, tea and chocolate products
have become increasingly important to La
Cafetière’s
ongoing success.
La Cafetière also works closely with
designers and manufacturers from Italy – the home of
‘real’ coffee – allowing the company to expand on its
familiar range of coffee-makers. It is the exclusive UK
distributor for Bialetti, established since the 1930s
and now the world’s largest manufacturer of stove-top
espresso pots.
From the art deco flair of Bialetti in
northern Italy and the Zen perfection of the Japanese
tea house to the leading designers on the UK scene, La
Cafetière works with the best in the world to make every
hot drink a satisfying and stylish experience every
time.

Dear Sixtyplusurfers

This is Gemma my daughter's much
loved bulldog. As a newish Grandma I used to be nervous
around Gemma if my Granddaughter Gracie was in the same
room. You always hear such awful things about dogs
attacking babies these days, and it always seems to
happen when Grandma is in charge.
Because my daughter and her husband live
over 400 miles away from me, I stay for a few days and
often share a room at night with Gemma. At first I used
to thoroughly dislike and distrust her. She snores
loudly (well, who wouldn't with a nose like that!) and
is very flatulent, but over the past 3 years I have come
to an understanding with her. I have a lot of respect
for her. She is the soul of patience with Gracie and
puts up with a lot of childish messing about without a
murmur.
We would never leave Gracie alone with
Gemma. People who do leave their children or
grandchildren alone with dogs are asking for trouble.
You never know what could happen. It just isn't worth
the risk.
Mrs
Oonagh Wood, Devon
Dear
Oonagh
Thank you for you for telling us about your
daughter's dog and for sending in the photograph. It's
great that you have made friends with her and she is so
well trained.

Dear Sixtyplusurfers
.jpg)
After retiring the recession soon ended
my husband’s chances of running a courier service.
Undeterred however, we started looking at other things
we could do further afield and came up with the idea of
doing up a French property to run as a Gite business in
Brittany.
After extensive searching, with a small
budget and looking at lots of ruins, we have found two
little houses and a small barn ripe for restoration. My
husband is good at speaking French and I in turn am now
polishing up my little French.
.jpg)
We plan to live in a caravan whilst we
rent out the Gites and be on site to look after our
guests, grow some vegetables and get stuck into some
serious DIY to eventually offer three pretty Gites to
those looking for peace and quiet.
At our age we did wonder if we were taking on too much
but decided that life was for living, learning,
experimenting and enjoying especially in the French
countryside!
Mrs Nicola Warren, Wrexham
Dear
Nicola
We wish you all the
best of luck with your Gites. Let us know how you get
on. We'd love to see more photographs.

Dear Sixtyplusurfers
My Smokie Memory
'Arbroath Smokies', my Father said to me.
We're off to a place right next to the sea.
'What are they?' I asked as my Father drove.
'The most delicious fish' he said 'in the whole entire
world'
'You can taste the smoke and wood chippings too'
'And the salty sea breeze' he nods it's all true.
They sounded delicious, like some exotic treat.
I was desperate to try, to taste and to eat.
So we arrived in old Arbroath Town.
With a large harbour wall of rustic brown.
A hub of activity, of life and fishing.
Oh and the boats! There were so many!
Full of creels and reels and all things fishy.
And to the little shop on the way to the park.
A smoky streaked doorway all ashy and dark.
A deep breath in, such a rich earthy aroma.
To home we fled with our fishy parcel.
Mum will be pleased with such a tasty morsel.
She grilled them a little to warm them up.
Served with fresh brown bread and milk in a cup.
Some crunchy salad (a veg must be had)
AAh! That flavour! I just felt so glad.
A little salty, a little sweet and that smokiness for
sure.
'Please can we go back dad, I think we should get more'
...................................................................
About the Poem
Hi, I loved spending time with my dad
when I was younger, I decided to put my memories of a
wonderful trip to Arbroath in poem form.
We had such lovely times all those years ago. Back then
you could walk along the Harbour wall and many an Easter
egg was rolled down the park just close to the old
Smokie House. I hope you like it.
Susannah Leggatt, Leicester
Dear
Susannah
Thank you for you
sending in your
wonderful poem. Arbroath Smokies sound delicious -
especially when you have such lovely memories of the
time you spent getting them with your father.
Do any other
readers have special childhood memories?

Don't Forget to
Chat & Socialise
.jpg)
This month we've had so many Letters in
the Sixtyplusurfers Mail Bag we've had to include some
on the Next Page!
However, we've always got plenty of space for all of
your letters on the
Chat & Socialise
page - so don't forget to visit and add your thoughts
and messages!
What is the Chat & Socialise page?
The
Chat & Socialise
page offers you the chance to meet other readers, take part in live
conversations, put up your own blogs and have debates.
It's very easy to join in. Simply click on the words
Chat & Socialise
and this will take you straight to the page. Then fill
in your profile and you're ready to get started.
To fill in your profile just enter a 'chat name' and
fill in a few details (we will not share this with any
other parties). Then tell us a little bit about
yourself. For example your hobbies, interests, likes and
dislikes. If you have a photograph of yourself then you
can also add this in as well.
If you don't have a photograph or a digital camera
you can use a picture from Google images. These can be
found by clicking on
www.google.co.uk
We suggest using a picture that tells
us a bit about you. Perhaps a flower or an animal if you
like wildlife, or something which shows one of your
hobbies such as a book or a camera.
Once you have filled in your profile then you can
take part in some of the conversations on our Message
Board. We've already started some threads. But if
there's a topic you want to talk about then why not
start your own conversation! The Message Board is just
for fun and a great way of sharing your views.
.jpg)
The
Chat & Socialise
page also allows you to share your
favourite photographs with other readers. So if you have
been on an interesting day out or have some beautiful
flowers in your garden - then send them along to the
chat page with a short title describing the photograph.
If you have a lot of information you want to include
then why not write a Blog. A blog can
take the form of a personalised diary - you can
include daily updates on what you are doing.

This
month in our special
Chat & Socialise

Readers' Letters
Sixtyplusurfers Star Letter
Dear Sixtyplusurfers
.jpg)
At
57, I decided to give up smoking
after 20 years, but decided that
I needed an incentive, so I
thought about all the things I
hadn't yet done, and wanted to
do, and going to Las Vegas was
on my "to do" list, so that's
what I did.
I gave up smoking
in February and immediately
started to feel the health
benefits, I was no longer
coughing in the morning, and out
of breath coming up the hill, so
that in itself was worth it.
Vegas is well known for its
gambling, but it's not something
that interested me at all,
however I did want to sample the
"Vegas Experience" and what a
place it is.
The hotels are amazing, we
stayed at the Bellagio, which is
well known for its erupting
fountains, that is an experience
not to be missed. The Venetian
hotel with its Little Italy
theme is just beautiful, and the
nearby famous cheesecake factory
is excellent, and yes, it really
is the best cheesecake in the
world. It was the longest flight
i have ever taken, but it was
comfortable and a very enjoyable
experience.
I didn't get to the Grand
Canyon, because there was so
little time and so much to do,
especially the shopping, but I
will go back again, and the
Canyon will be top of my list. I
went in October and the weather
was lovely, and if your very
lucky, you might even see the
odd celeb or two.
I met Jerry
Springer who kindly had his
photo taken with me, he invited
me to Planet Hollywood that
night to see Americas Got Talent
which they were filming, but I
had to decline, because we had
booked to go and see a show.
It's an amazing place and one
that you will definitely want to
return to.
So ... not only
did i have a fantastic holiday
of a lifetime, but I also
managed to give up the dreadful
weed, and I feel like a new
person.
Pat Fenech,
High Wycombe
Dear Pat
That's great news that you gave
up smoking and it sounds like
you had the holiday of a
lifetime in Las Vegas. We like
your picture with Jerry Springer
- he looks very friendly.
We
are delighted to let you know
that you are the winner of this
month's Star Letter competition.
Your prize is £70 of Marks &
Spencer Vouchers.

Dear Sixtyplusurfers
.jpg)
I'm writing to
tell you about my husband John's
hobby. He enjoys working with
wood and is currently making
bird houses. He makes them in
all sizes and colours.
Whilst he was browsing through
our daughter, Hannah's photos of
her holiday in Canada, his
attention was caught by a
mountain hut in which she had
stayed. He proceeded to make a
little replica as a bird house.
.jpg)
Hannah was
delighted when she received it
for Christmas, as it was a
complete surprise!
Best wishes to all at
sixtyplusurfers
Linda Taylor, Warrington
Dear Linda
What a wonderful hobby. Your
daughter must have been
delighted to receive her
specially made bird house.
Whenever she goes out in the
garden it must bring back lovely
memories of her holiday in
Canada.

Dear Sixtyplusurfers
.jpg)
In the Summer,
we went to Portugal with the
whole family, for the first
time. The weather was boiling
hot each day after ten
o'clock, and the beaches used to
be jam packed with people.
We chose a lovely
little beach called Maria Louisa
beach, where we sat each day
near a cliff, to give us some
protection from the sunshine.
Imagine our
horror, when on the day we
arrived back, there was a
headline news about this very
beach, showing the very cliff
we were sat under each day, had
crashed, and a number of people
had been killed that morning!
It really shook
me, and although we had really
enjoyed our holiday, it sort of
took away some of the magic feel
of our trip. It just shows - you
never know what's around the
corner so make the most of each
day!
Joan Apperley, Bristol
Dear Joan
Thank you for telling us about
your holiday in Portugal and
sending in your photograph. You
must have been relieved to be
home safely.
We never know what's around the
corner, so it's best to enjoy
life to the full and make the
most of each day.

Dear Sixtyplusurfers
I've
got a handy tip
which really works. I've used it
on all of my doors at home.
If
you have too many squeaks on
your doors, rub a bit of cooking
oil on the hinges - no more
squeaks.
Georgina Sudron, Cleveland
Dear Georgina
Thank you very much for your
handy tip. That sounds a very
good idea and inexpensive too!

Dear Sixtyplusurfers
I must confess
that I have started lying about
my age.
Have you noticed
how many online forms you fill
in ask for your date of birth?
Why do they need this? As far
as I'm concerned my date of
birth is one of the pieces of
security information that I
prefer to keep secret between
myself and my bank - and maybe a
few others on a 'need to know
basis'.
I do admit to my
year of birth but nothing else.
Why don't you
start to lie about your age too
- keep your personal details
safe!
David Jones, Liverpool
Dear David
Thank you for your letter. I can
see your point about 'online
forms' as it is none of their
business.
But I would make
sure that you put your correct
date of birth on official
documents and important forms
such as patient records and
pension details where this sort
of information is vital to get
the correct medical treatment or
entitlements that you might
need.

Dear Sixtyplusurfers
During my days as an Accident
and Emergency ambulance man, we
were often called to incidents
where there was the potential
for personal risk. Our training
hammered home the message that
our personal safety should
always be secured before we
attempted treatment or rescue.
Generally this was properly
observed, but on some occasions
we would be faced with a
situation where it was just too
difficult to stand and wait, and
we would judge the risk to be
worth taking. This humorous
account tells of one such
occasion.
My colleague and I had been
called to a traffic accident at
a notorious local crossroads. We
knew from experience that
accidents there were usually
serious so wasted no time in
getting there. On arrival we
noticed that a Mini had been in
collision with a heavy van, and
the Mini and its lady driver had
come off the worst in the
encounter. Closer inspection
revealed that she was trapped by
the steering wheel against her
chest, and her breathing was
shallow. There was also a strong
smell of petrol, which could
also be seen dripping onto the
road. We immediately called for
the Fire and Rescue Service
which was standard procedure in
such cases. We then did what
little we could while we waited
for the Fire Service.
Almost immediately, I noticed
that the lady was rapidly
deteriorating, her breathing was
failing, her pulse weak, and her
lips were going dark blue. We
simply couldn’t stand by and
watch her die so agreed that we
had to try and get her out
immediately. My colleague was
rather slight of build, and I of
a rather chunkier physique, so I
was better suited for applying
the brute force needed to move
the steering wheel. I climbed
into the Mini and adopted a most
undignified posture, but one
which give me most leverage on
the seat back, and the steering
wheel. In short, I was half
straddling the casualty with my
back arched against the roof. My
hands on the back of the
driver’s seat, and my nether
regions squashed inelegantly
against the windscreen. I was
also face to face with the lady.
I should add at this stage, that
the grey beard that I wear today
was then much darker and much
fuller. It was also the practice
in our service for ambulance
crews to wear hospital white
coats.
Almost
instantly, as I applied brute
force, I felt the seat back give
a little, and I could see the
steering wheel move away from
the lady’s chest. I was
delighted to see the colour
flooding back to her lips, and
her cheeks began to lose their
greyness. A moment later, her
eyes fluttered open and she
found herself looking directly
into my own eyes. Before I could
speak, still looking into my
eyes, she asked of this bearded
, white robed, smiling figure
above her, “Are you God?”. I
replied in the negative, and she
spoke again. “Well are you an
angel then?” I laughingly
assured her that I was neither
God nor an angel, at which she
looked quite relieved, smiled
and said “So I’m not dead then?”
I too was smiling as I heard the
sirens of the approaching fire
tender, and was much relieved to
be able to hand over to our Fire
Service colleagues ,who made
short work of dealing with the
petrol leak and completing the
extrication of the casualty.
Later, at the hospital, the lady
was found to have suffered four
broken ribs, and extensive
bruising, but was very soon up
and about, and made a full
recovery. Her Mini, sadly, was
a complete write-off.

Dear
Padraig
Thank you for sending in your
funny story. It sounds like you
had an exciting time as an

man.

Dear Sixtyplusurfers
The snow came
down and we all said
'How lovely and
how pretty'
But after several
weeks of snow
There's no more
salt and gritty
We're all trapped
in our houses
We're all going
stir crazy
We need to get
out and about
We're tired of
being lazy
Carol Duley, Kent
Dear Carol
Thank you for sending in your
snowy poem. Thank goodness the
snow has all thawed!

Dear Sixtyplusurfers
.jpg)
My wife Irene and
I had a wonderful holiday in San
Francisco and Las Vegas in 2009.
Before we went, people told us
that Vegas was vulgar and tacky
and not really a place to go for
any more than a day or two. But
we followed our instincts and
stayed for a week and, to an
extent, our friends were right.
Las Vegas is vulgar but, if you
accept it for what it is with
all the bright lights, noise,
entertainment and fun, then it
is a knockout. We aren't
gamblers but the casinos are
fascinating for people watching
and this picture summed it all
up for us. It was taken in
Harrah's Hotel in the main strip
and it represented a kind of
"let your hair down" approach to
life, because after all it
really is for living, especially
in a town like Vegas.
I hope your readers enjoy it.
Best wishes,
Joe Cushnan
Dear Joe
It sounds like you had a great
holiday. We like your funny
photograph.

Dear Sixtyplusurfers
Our Year
How much bad luck
can one couple have? In January
2009, I was recovering from an
unexpected heart attack. I had
to give up work 2 years before
that through poor health, so we
hoped that we would have a
better time in 2009.
Then in March my husband's
younger brother died of bowel cancer. It was
fairly quick as by the time the doctors found
out what was wrong, it was too far spread to
help him. He was only 55. Then my husband had
an accident at work (he was an electricity
jointer) and burnt his face and hands. He
was treated at Stoke Mandeville burns hospital.
Then I found out that I had bowel
cancer. It's the worst feeling ever. I was 59
at the time. I had lost my Mum at 60 from breast
cancer. Was I going to go the same age?
Thankfully, we live in Oxford and have some of
the finest hospitals in the country. I was
operated on twice and they said my tumour was
the size of a large sausage and it had probably
been growing for 4 - 5 years.
My husband losing his job was the
next body blow. Then my Dad died. Okay, he was
86 and had a good life, but it doesn't make it
any easier. Then to round the year off, I had a
nasty dose of shingles.
But, we feel we must have got rid
of all our bad luck in one year. Hubby has
another job. Not so well paid but it keeps us
going, and we are looking forward things turning
round for us this year.
Last week my middle son's partner
won quite a large sum of money from a
television contest and a holiday to Saint Lucia,
so they are now talking about getting married
there.
So, life can be turned around.
Never give up. Things may look black but you
can turn a corner into a better life. We are
looking forward to our 43rd wedding anniversary
in September.
Stephanie Axtell, Oxford
Dear Stephanie
It sounds like you have had a
lot of bad luck. But it does
sound like your life is turning
around.
We wish your husband all the best for his new job, congratulations
on your son's forthcoming wedding and we hope
you have a lovely wedding anniversary in
September.
