Dora's Diary

A Monthly Dog Blog

Hi folks. Hope you’re all well. And me? To be honest, a bit on edge. You see, Bossman’s been lurking about, muttering about giving me a trim. Seems my whiskers and top knot are getting too long. Need cutting back a bit. Well, if he does decide to have a go let’s hope he doesn’t make a mess of it.

Mind you, he’s had a few battles when he’s had to get his own hair cut. He uses a lady barber called Alma who owns two Lhasa Apsos. Apparently, she’s as mad as a Hatter.

If any warning signs are needed then the two barber’s poles, one each side of the plate glass entrance to her barber’s shop, spell them out: their bandages of red and white suggestive of a blood bath to be experienced within. When Bossman first went in, he found Alma kneeling over a tray laid on a low glass table. Black tee shirt and black jeans clothed a heavy builder’s body. Greasy blonde hair fell to her shoulders and fringed eyes that were encrusted with black mascara. She saw him looking at the tray and got to her feet. “Just sorting through my gear,” she said.

The gear in question seemed to consist of some steel-toothed thinning scissors, a pair of electric clippers, two combs and a black brush. All items were enmeshed in a tangled weave of grey, brown, black and blond strands of hair. Uck.

“It’s a cut you want then,” said Alma, guiding Bossman to the one black barber’s chair. “It’s gone a bit quiet,’ she added, as he hunkered down. “But there were quite a few in earlier.”

He gulped. The evidence was everywhere. Clumps of hair encircled the chair. And a flurry of short clippings flew into the air when Alma shook out a black cotton cover and knotted it round his throat before slipping a rubber bib under his chin. He wondered where she had stored the scalps as she started to tackle his.

Bossman did survive that session; and it gave him the courage to return on a regular basis. In doing so he eventually met two of her other regulars. Her Lhasa Apsos – Su Li and one of her sons, Ming.

“My lazy Apsos,” Alma would exclaim, referring to the fact that the two dogs, whenever present, would commandeer the large sofa that stretches along the back of the salon, spreading themselves out, leaving any waiting client squashed at one end.

They should have been a smart looking pair. Bicoloured. Long hair parted down the back, falling each side in bands of black and white to almost touch the ground. Likewise, the silky white hair on their heads parted to sweep down over their eyes and line up level with their beards. Well, in theory that’s how they would have looked had it not been for Alma’s constant tinkering with her scissors. She might have had the skills to style a man’s hair. But in the case of Su Li and Ming, her skills sadly fell short, leaving them looking like a day’s worth of barbering that had been swept into two piles.

Visits to her salon were fun more than fearful. There was the occasion when Bossman found her pounding along a portable running track while watching a Jane Fonda DVD. “Trying to get fit,” she gasped. “Doing a sponsored dog walk this Sunday.”

He looked across to the sofa where Su Li and Ming were stretched out fast asleep and snoring. He wondered if she’d try getting them on the machine. “Do you want a go?” she said, stumbling off.

Bossman shook his head. “Just a haircut, thanks.”

Inevitably there were times when Alma sought veterinary advice from him. He’d be tied down in her chair with no escape from the scissors waving in his face as she asked about worming, vaccinations, the fleas she’d found on Su Li.

Her scissors were snipping away at top speed one afternoon, when she asked, “Do you think I should have Ming doctored?”

At that precise moment, Ming was under Bossman’s cotton cover, clutching his leg in an amorous embrace. He shook his leg free and nodded. Definitely snip … snip … time for him. And on this occasion, he’d be the one holding the scissors. Ouch.

Love and licks,

Pets Can Improve your Life

Get a New Lease of Life with Pet Sitting

The issue of loneliness was recently highlighted in the media as Tracey Crouch MP was appointed the new minister for loneliness to continue the work started by the late MP Jo Cox and tackle the issue that is affecting nine million in the UK.

Alan Irvine, Chairman of Homesitters Ltd suggests that one solution for combatting loneliness, especially for older people, is to become a homesitter, looking after people’s homes and pets when they are away. He says the role is sociable, fun and gets people out and about discovering new places.

Alan Irvine says, “95% of our homesitters are aged 55 and over and many are retired.  Many of our homesitters make friends in new areas or join local groups or churches. Most assignments involve looking after pets and dog walking, which is a very social activity. It also helps people stay fit and healthy which is good for overall mental health.”

“For some, homesitting can be a real lifeline. It keeps them busy and is a great way to meet new people and explore new places. We employ a mix of single people and couples who join us when they retire. The perks include travelling around the UK and looking after animals, as well as earning extra income, which can be handy for retired people.”

Anne and Cliff Law from Oxfordshire took early retirement in 2010 and decided to become homesitters to fill the void in their life after working. The couple love animals and a real highlight for them is looking after pets. They enjoy keeping fit and getting exercise taking dogs for walks.  Over the years the couple have carried out 112 assignments and looked after 60 different dogs, 30 cats as well as chickens, budgies and hamsters.

The couple do many repeat visits, as they become quite attached to the pets and get to know the neighbours and other dog walkers in the area. They find dog walking very sociable and often get chatting to people. The couple have also become great friends with some of their regular clients and keep in touch with them throughout the year.

Cliff says, “Home and pet sitting is a fantastic hobby, we receive a remuneration and expenses which is useful, but the main benefit is having the chance to visit different places, spend time with dogs and cats and the exercise we get taking dogs for walks.

“We get to stay in some very special places. We recently did an assignment in a huge old rectory in the Cotswold countryside with stunning views. Sitting on the sofa with a dog either side of me resting their heads in my lap was just idyllic.

“Most houses we stay in have beautiful gardens which are usually maintained by professional gardeners, so we’re able to appreciate them without doing any of the work! Some of the homes also have swimming pools or cinema rooms which can be a real treat.”

Retired nurse, Pat Hughes also loves home and pet sitting. Pat took on the role to keep fit and active, get her fix of animals and travel whenever she wants. She also finds it very sociable.

On a recent home stay for a regular client she joined two local walking clubs and a Zumba class, where she made new friends. She also attended the local church and was invited to lunch by members of the congregation.

Pet Care Advice from RSPCA

Nine out of Ten Cats are not Microchipped

Pet owners are being urged to microchip their cats as the RSPCA figures reveal almost nine out of ten moggies coming into its care are not chipped. By law dogs have to be microchipped however cats do not which makes it much more difficult to discover if they have an owner and then reunite them.

The RSPCA is urging loving owners to make sure they microchip their cats as 87% of cats brought into the RSPCA national centres in 2017 did not have a microchip.

Caroline Allen, the director of the RSPCA’s London Hospitals says, “We see heartfelt stories where cats have been reunited with their owners after a few weeks, a few months or even a few years because we were able to trace them with the microchip details.

“However, there are thousands of cats coming into our care with no microchip at all, or details which are not kept up-to-date, meaning there are lots of cats who are unlikely to ever see their owner again. It’s absolutely heartbreaking.”

“Not only are a lot of cats still not being chipped but during one week last summer, our London veterinary hospitals had nine cats with out-of-date microchip details making it extremely difficult to track down their owners.

“Microchipping your pet is vitally important in ensuring that if anything happens to them, if they are lost or stolen, or hit by a car, then they can be returned to you.

“Despite our best efforts to find an owner, the most reliable way to identify a cat is to have him or her microchipped. If the contact details are out of date the chip is completely useless so it is vitally important to tell the chip company yourself if any contact details change.

“We see cases where we would love to reunite microchipped cats with their owner but can’t because the details have not been updated.

“We also find that many people don’t realise that the chip is just a number that cross references to a database. If the information on that database is old and out-of-date then the chip is useless. Telling your vet does not automatically update the details on the database but this is something you can do yourself online.

“Out of date chips can often be worse than no chips at all as the cats spend weeks in the cattery while we are desperately trying to chase details and send letters before we can rehome them.”

Gizmo, a ginger cat with a microchip which showed an address and number in Poland was found straying and poorly with diarrhoea, dehydration and a distended abdomen.

As the microchip was registered to a Polish database, the staff believe the owners of the cat did not update their details when they moved to the UK. RSPCA Putney Animal Hospital where the ginger moggy is currently being treated is still trying to trace an owner but have had no luck.

The RSPCA microchips every cat we rehomes strongly recommends that every owner gets their cat microchipped and keeps the details updated.

Advice for your Dog

Addressing Problem Behaviour in Dogs

There can be a stigma attached to the way some dogs behave; this can be especially true if they are a certain type of breed.

PDSA vet nurse, Katy Orton says, “The truth is that any dog, no matter what breed, can behave in an aggressive or undesirable manner – but with some training, many problems can be overcome.”

“The most important thing is to take it seriously – the sooner aggressive behaviours are addressed, the better the chances are of correcting it. Dogs showing signs of aggression, such as growling, snarling and snapping have the potential to cause harm to another animal or person so any signs of aggression need to be tackled early.”

The first port of call for owners noticing unusually aggressive behaviour is to speak to their vet. The vet will be able to check for an illness or injury which may be the cause of a pet’s sudden grumpiness.

Katy adds, “when we are unwell or in pain, that can affect our behaviour, so it makes sense that these things could also cause behaviour changes in our pets. If your dog gets a clean bill of health, then the next step is referral to an Association of Pet Behaviour Councillors registered behaviourist to try and find out what is causing the behaviour and start with a modification plan.”

Once the behaviourist has determined the cause of the problem, they will be able to recommend a plan to help get your dog back on the right track.  A common cause of aggression in dogs is actually fear. New situations can sometimes be frightening and overwhelming for them.  The best way to give dogs more confidence in new situations is through gradual training and socialisation.

Socialisation involves carefully introducing your dog to new people, animals, places and experiences in a positive way. It’s more effective for puppies, but can help dogs of any age. PDSA’s website has lots of information about how to socialise your dog, just visit

Every owner can help their dog understand which behaviours and good and which are unwanted.  Punishing a dog for unwanted behaviour often makes the problem worse, as Katy explains: “punishment can create confusion, anxiety and make a dog even more fearful of a situation. Instead, focus on rewarding good behaviour with positive interactions and ignoring any behaviour that you don’t want.”

Training is also a great way to help you bond with your dog and you can start basic reward-based training as soon as you get your dog. Once your dog is fully vaccinated, it is a good idea to attend training classes to help them meet new dogs and people in a controlled environment. Training can start with simple commands such as “come”, “sit” and “leave”, but remember your dog may have a short attention span, especially at the start!

No matter how well trained your dog is or how well you know their temperament, children should never be left unsupervised with them. Children and dogs should be actively supervised at all times when they are together. Teaching youngsters how to act around dogs and how to interpret their body language is a great way to help both of them to stay safe.

If you know your dog can be unpredictable around strangers it’s a good idea to have a comfortable area or room they can be secured in if you have a visitor or delivery.

Katy concludes, “If you have any behavioural concerns about your dog or you ever see signs of aggression, discuss these with your vet who can refer you to an accredited professional.”
